Betty is Director of the Sonderegger Research Center. She completed her PhD in Educational Psychology and a post-doctoral program in Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Chewning's research has focused on the client provider partnership. She studies their communication patterns, perceptions and regimen decisions. She also studies expanded pharmacist roles with respect to public health agendas.
Dr. Chewning is currently Principal Investigator of three studies. She is directing a multi-site longitudinal, randomized controlled trial of an intervention to increase patient-provider communication of the patient's agenda during a visit and its impact on health outcomes. This is funded by the National Institute of Aging, NIH. Second, she and a team are working with pharmacists to implement and evaluate a pharmacy based intervention for smoking cessation in the state of Wisconsin. Lastly, she is funded to develop a coding tool to analyze the degree of agreement between patient and provider during their encounters.
Dr. Chewning recently completed work as the Principal Investigator for two five-year federal research grants. The first, funded by the Agency Health Care Policy and Research, is a descriptive study of patients with arthritis. She studied patient medication decision-making and behaviors in relation to their clinical status and perceived quality of life. The second grant, funded through the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NIH, was a demonstration and evaluation project to reduce the spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases as well as unwanted pregnancy among adolescents.
Dr. Chewning has been the director and principal investigator on several other grants in the areas of health education, client adherence to regimens, and staff roles in health education. Her work in patient education resulted in a series of staff training manuals published and distributed nationally by the American Hospital Association.
