Mentoring

The UW School of Pharmacy Student Senate and the Pharmacy Alumni Association coordinate a pharmacy mentor program for pre-pharmacy and first-year Pharm D. students. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for these students to explore the many different areas of pharmacy practice in order to find their niche in the profession.

What will I get out of the Mentor Program?

  • You will develop and cultivate a relationship with a student and future colleague
  • You will have the opportunity to contribute to the future of our profession by guiding and shaping a student’s perception of pharmacy while serving as a role model for a future practitioner.
  • We will provide tools and guidelines for you to facilitate a positive, unique experience for both you and your student.
  • You will have multiple opportunities for self-reflection, and gain insight into yourself, your leadership style, and your listening style.

The Mentor Program Coordinator will match you with an interested student. You may not be immediately matched with a student. Matching is based primarily on geographical location and time availability. In the event that you are not matched with a student, we will keep your contact information on file for a future match with a student.

How do I become a mentor?

We would prefer that potential mentors meet the following criteria:

  • Three years of practice experience
  • Involved in a quality pharmacy practice
  • Employed by the current employer for at least 1 year
  • Able to provide a positive experience for the students
  • Available to commit a minimum of 4-12 hours per student annually
  • Able to provide a reference from an employer or colleague
  • Able to encourage learning and professional growth
  • Good communicator and listener
  • Enthusiastic and passionate about the profession of pharmacy!

Even if you have never served as a mentor, we encourage you to become involved in the program. You may find an application form here. If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact the Mentor Program Coordinator at the address listed below.
