The School of Pharmacy at UW-Madison has an extensive and quality network of practice locations giving Pharm.D. students quality and diverse experiences during the program. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) requires a variety of experiences during each year of the Pharm.D. program.
A minimum of 100 hours is required for each of the first three years (DPH-1, DPH-2, DPH-3) of the Pharm.D. program. These 100 hours of experiences are called Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs). IPPEs site locations include community and institutional settings and are designed to offer direct interaction with a diverse patient population.
A minimum of 1520 hours of practice experience rotations is required during the fourth year (DPH-4) of the Pharm.D. program. These rotation hours during the fourth year are called Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). APPEs begin in the summer directly following the third year of the Pharm.D. program. These full-time rotations include hospital, outpatient, and pharmaceutical care settings. Rotations are offered in different regions throughout Wisconsin. The regions are as follows: Eau Claire, Green Bay, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Wausau. Students may choose which region to do rotations. However, not all students are able to participate in the Madison region.
