Upon registration, you will need to select AT LEAST FIVE of the breakout sessions listed below, and rank them, with a ranking of 1 being your first choice. Please rank the sessions for both the prospective student and guest.
Be sure to read the descriptions carefully before making your choices! Every attempt will be made to assign you and your guest to your top preferences, but because of space limitations, this may not be possible in all cases. The information packet you receive upon your arrival and registration on February 9, 2008 will identify the afternoon sessions to which you have been assigned.
Application/Admissions Information
Intended for students who are considering applying to the School of Pharmacy at some time in the future, this session will include information on requirements for admission, the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), application procedures and deadlines, the criteria used by the Admission Committee, and admission statistics.
Career Opportunities for Graduates of the B.S. Pharmacology/Toxicology Program
While the Doctor of Pharmacy degree prepares students for employment as a registered pharmacist, the School of Pharmacy's undergraduate program in Pharmacology and Toxicology is ideal for the student interested in preparing for graduate school, medical school, or another advanced degree. The Pharmacology/Toxicology major also prepares one for a career as a drug/toxicant information specialist in government or private industry, as a research technician in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry, or at an educational institution or state or federal government agency. Meet with the faculty advisor to the program, who will discuss career and educational opportunities available to students who graduate with a Pharmacology/Toxicology degree.
A Conversation with Pharmacists
Meet three or four pharmacists working in diverse settings and learn about their work and the variety of career opportunities available to graduates of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.
Why Pharmacists Need to Know About Diversity
Issues of diversity and social justice shape the delivery of health care to people across the world. Come to chat with our Director of Diversity to learn more about why future pharmacists need to become sensitive to issues of culture and inequality as part of their preparation for the profession.
Meet the Faculty
Join three School of Pharmacy faculty in an informal discussion about their teaching, research, and public service activities. Each of the three divisions of the School (Pharmacy Practice, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Social and Administrative Pharmacy) will be represented by the three faculty members.
An Overview of Financial Aid
A counselor from the UW Office of Student Financial Services will explain financial aid availability and eligibility criteria for students in the School of Pharmacy, and the application and notification process as it relates to students attending the UW-Madison.
Pharmacist/Patient Interaction: A Demonstration
One of the primary responsibilities of pharmacists is to assist patients in making the best use of their medications. An important component of this function is counseling patients about how to use and what to expect from their medications. In this session, you will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of pharmacist communication skills as you observe pharmacy students in a role-playing demonstration of a pharmacist-patient consultation.
Pharmacy Student Perspectives
How difficult are the courses in the School of Pharmacy? How much studying is required? Is it possible to work while enrolled in pharmacy school? A panel of current Doctor of Pharmacy and Pharmacology/Toxicology students will be on hand to answer these and other questions, and provide their own perspectives on life in the School of Pharmacy.
