Message from the Dean

Dear Student of the School of Pharmacy:

I am delighted to welcome our new students to the School of Pharmacy, and welcome back our continuing students. You are members of one of the nation's leading internationally-respected pharmacy schools, a school rich with numerous research and clinical practice educational opportunities. Your education should allow you to explore the many exciting opportunities available to today's pharmacists and to those with a strong pharmacology/toxicology background.

This school was founded in 1883, initiated the first baccalaureate program in pharmacy in America in 1893, and awarded the first American Ph.D. in a pharmaceutical science in 1902 and the first American Ph.D. in pharmacy in 1917. Educational innovations continue to evolve. The UW School of Pharmacy provides programmatic education in pharmaceutics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical biochemistry, pharmacy practice and the social and administrative sciences. We hope that you find this setting intellectually rewarding and are as proud as we are to be affiliated with this major institution.

You are here to be educated in professional pharmacy or in one of the related pharmaceutical fields. The faculty, staff, and administration are here to help you reach your goal. We have the necessary knowledge and experience, and we will contribute much of the effort. Not all of it, however; good education is an active process, and you, the student, must contribute your share of the effort. You will find it rewarding to succeed in developing your fundamental knowledge and your professional skills.

This Student Handbook is designed to help you by providing information on services, programs, organizations, and people. I hope you have a successful student career in the School of Pharmacy, and I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Jeanette C. Roberts, Dean
