Alan L. Hanson, Ph.D., R.Ph., (Professor and Department Chair) has earned the following degrees, all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy: B.S. (1969) in Pharmacy, and M.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1978) in Continuing Education in Pharmacy. He is licensed to practice pharmacy and has experience as a pharmacy practitioner in both ambulatory and acute care settings. He joined the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy faculty in 1973 as an Instructor in Pharmaceutical Dispensing. Dr. Hanson serves as Chair of Extension Services in Pharmacy and Associate Dean of Outreach for the School of Pharmacy. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dr. Hanson is actively involved in all phases associated with the development and implementation of postgraduate continuing professional education programs targeted for practicing pharmacists as well as personnel within the pharmaceutical industry. Specific activities include the planning, development, marketing, administration and evaluation of continuing education programs at the state, national and international level. Dr. Hanson has been actively involved in research and publication in the area of adult and continuing education with over 40 publications as journal articles, book chapters and instructional manuals. Dr. Hanson and his colleague Dr. De Muth, achieved national recognition in 1993 for their research when they received the Rufus A. Lyman Award for the most notable original research and/or scholarly work published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, "A Study of Pharmacists' Behavior as Lifelong Learners" Am. J. Pharm. Ed. 56:335 (1992).

Effective July 1, 2008, Dr. Hanson was named to a 4 year term as the first recipient of the Melvin H. Weinswig Chair in Pharmacy Continuing Education. The Weinswig Chair recognizes sustained excellence in pharmacy continuing education as demonstrated through administrative, teaching, service, and/or scholarly activities.
