RE: Preregistration and Registration for Summer 1999 and Fall 1999 Distance Education Courses
Welcome to Preregistration for Summer 1999 and Fall 1999. This message contains important information about preregistration and registration for distance education courses. Please read it carefully. There is also a section which allows you to select your preferred courses and substitute courses and submit them to us electronically. The due dates are:
Summer 1999 course requests: Due March 30, 1999
Fall 1999 course requests: Due May 14, 1999
If you do not want to enroll in any courses for a particular term (Summer 1999 or Fall 1999), it is important for you to indicate this by checking the box in Item 4 on the course preference form for that term.
1. PREREGISTRATION
In this message, you will find a list of Summer 1999 and Fall 1999 Nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy (NTPD) offerings for distance education courses. Course descriptions for fall, spring and summer (NTPD) courses are also included. Please note that certain courses are not available at this time. Because all of the summer and fall courses have enrollment limits, we are conducting a survey to see how many students want to enroll in each course. Because we do not know how many students wish to take each course, we can make no guarantees for any student for registration in any particular course. If the demand for a course exceeds the course capacity, a random selection preregistration process will be used to determine which students will be allowed to enroll in the course. This preregistration process is done to ensure equitable access to courses by all our students.
Students who are currently enrolled in the NTPD program will receive first priority for preregistration for summer and fall semester courses. Students who have been admitted to the NTPD program and who expect to remove all admission course completion contingencies by May 1, 1999 also will receive first priority for preregistration for Summer 1999 courses. Students who have been admitted to the NTPD program and who do not expect to remove all admission course completion contingencies by May 1, 1999 will receive second priority for preregistration for Summer 1999 courses. Students who have been admitted to the NTPD program but who have not removed admission course completion contingencies by May 1, 1999 will receive second priority for preregistration for fall semester courses. Individuals who are interested in the NTPD program but who have not yet been admitted to the NTPD program will receive third priority for preregistration for summer and fall semester courses. Individuals who are interested in taking summer and/or fall semester courses for professional development will receive fourth priority for preregistration. Preregistration for all courses will be on a space-available basis.
Assignment to Summer 1999 distance education courses will take place in April and will be based on the course requests that you submit by March 30th. In April, we will send you via e-mail a list of the distance education course(s) for which you have been approved.
Assignments to Fall 1999 distance education courses will take place in May and will be based on the course requests that you submit by May 14th. In June, we will send you via e-mail a list of the distance education course(s) for which you have been approved.
Please complete the electronic Summer Sessions 1999 and Fall Semester 1999 distance education course preference forms that are included in this message. We are asking you to submit your first choices ("preferred courses," ranked in order of preference) and some acceptable substitutes in case courses close due to high demand. If you do not want to enroll in any distance education courses in summer and/or fall semester, please check the appropriate statement on the course preference form. Please submit your responses electronically by the due dates to maintain your priority status for preregistration. If your distance education course preferences are received electronically after the due date, you may be placed in a lower priority status for preregistration.
If you would like to investigate the possibility of enrolling in Summer 1999 or Fall 1999 professional elective courses offered on the UW-Madison campus, please contact Pam Palmer as soon as possible.
2. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMER 1999 COURSES
There will be two required teleconferences for each of the following courses:
Pharmacy Practice 728-721, Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy
Pharmacy Practice 728-724, Infectious Disease Pharmacotherapy
Travel to an ETN site in Wisconsin will be required for these teleconferences. Out-of-state students will be connected through phone hook-ups. If student enrollments do not warrant the use of the ETN network, telephone conferencing will replace the ETN format.
3. IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT FALL 1999 COURSES
A. There will be two required teleconferences for each of the following courses:
Pharmacy Practice 728-725, Immunology Pharmacotherapy
Pharmacy Practice 728-727, Neuropsychiatric Pharmacotherapy
Travel to an ETN site in Wisconsin will be required for these teleconferences. Out-of-state students will be connected through phone hook-ups. If student enrollments do not warrant the use of the ETN network, telephone conferencing will replace the ETN format.
B. Pharmacy Practice 728-570, Drug Literature Evaluation.
While the format for the Fall 1999 offering of Drug Literature Evaluation has not been finalized, students should anticipate that they will be required to participate in an all-day live discussion session at one or more sites in Wisconsin. This one day discussion will most likely occur on a Saturday approximately 4 to 6 weeks into the 8-week module.
4. REGISTRATION
The University is converting to a new student records system in March - April, 1999. There will be some procedural changes in the touchtone registration system and a new touchtone telephone number. When we send your lists of approved distance education courses for summer sessions and fall semester, we will also send you information which will help you to register in the new system.
5. SPECIAL STUDENT CREDIT LIMIT
There is a 16-credit limit on the number of nontraditional doctor of pharmacy degree credits that can be earned while classified as a university special student. At the time that credits earned as a special student are applied as degree credits, a fee assessment will be made to recover the difference between the fee per credit as a special student and the fee per credit for degree course work. This adjusted assessment does not apply to biostatistics taken through the University of Iowa correspondence division.
6. ACADEMIC ADVISING
Please select the menu choices for Summer 1999 and Fall 1999 distance education course offerings and course descriptions. Read these carefully. We encourage you to consult Bob Breslow, the NTPD academic advisor, both about your summer and fall semester distance education course preferences and about your long-range academic plans.
Please contact us if you have any questions about this message or any aspect of the nontraditional Pharm.D. program. Let us know if you encounter technical difficulties in submitting your course preferences. Please be especially careful when typing your e-mail address on the course preference forms. If you list your e-mail address incorrectly on the course preference forms, your course preferences will not reach Pam Palmer.
Please remember that your course requests have the following deadlines:
Due March 30, 1999 (for Summer 1999 courses)
Due May 14, 1999 (for Fall 1999 courses)
We admire your dedication to your professional development. Best of luck in your current studies!
