Mission and Research Agenda

The SRC and Its Mission

The mission of the Sonderegger Research Center is to conduct research that promotes health, improves healthcare, and supports effective pharmacy services. Target audiences for research findings include policy makers, the professions of healthcare and pharmacy, and citizens.

To address this mission, a core interdisciplinary faculty of social and administrative scientists study the organization, delivery, financing, quality and outcomes of pharmacy within the broader health care system.

Prior to the opening of the Sonderegger Research Center in 1985, there was no research center anywhere in the country that was dedicated to the study and furtherance of social and administrative pharmacy. That absence was particularly felt at the University of Wisconsin where its School of Pharmacy had been one of the first in the country to offer a Masters and Doctorate in Pharmacy Administration and Social Studies in Pharmacy.

When initiated, the Sonderegger Research Center was the first U.S. center to feature social science-focused research in pharmacy, and it remains a national leader. The field of pharmacy continues to exist in a highly competitive environment undergoing major financial and structural changes. To this end, six pharmacy professors affiliated with the SRC have conducted the federal, international and private studies outlined in this report.
